You are describing a wide range of problems: language, reading, math, writing. Your child is 8. You can do a bit of this and try a bit of that and still not hit upon what works if you don't have a really solid idea of what is going on.
If your child is getting speech and language through the school, you should be able to request an eval for potential learning disabilities without enrolling him in school. If you just get the IQ and achievement tests done free, that would be a huge chunk of private testing. Then, if you need to pursue any further testing or treatment, you will have saved that money.
In the Wilson program, the child progresses very similarly in each lesson to what you describe: letters with tiles (this differentiates the sounds/letters), single words on cards, lists of words in charts, the same words in sentences, then the words in short stories. This progression is very helpful. I couldn't tell whether you are doing this progression every day, or whether at the end of the week, you add in the sentences. If it's at the end of the week, I would try it daily. Also, what another poster said about fluency reading is critical. This is included in the Wilson program, but you can do it yourself in the program that you are using.
