I know an owner of a Sylvan center. She had absolutely NO experience with kids or education.
They test using tests like the CAT, which are not designed to evaluate an individual student, except for screening purposes. Based on the CAT results, they use a "paint by number" approach to tutoring specific content or skill weaknesses based on the CAT.
There is no attention to the underlying phonemic or other issues that I am aware of.
My nephew went to Sylvan. Results were not good.
It is terribly expensive for what you get. You could get a quality evaluation and quality tutoring for the same price.
