Vision therapy works on the foundational skill level of those three layers. Once that level is corrected, the next level up often needs stimulation to get up to par.
The visual efficiency skills that VT works on include things like convergence (binocularity), accommodation (focusing speed), tracking (saccades and pursuits), etc.
The next developmental level up from that is the cognitive skills layer, which includes visual *processing* skills. These include things such as pattern recognition, short-term visual memory, visual sequential memory, working memory, visualization, etc. If there has been a sensory-level deprivation for many years, there will also be delays in acquisition of cognitive skills. Programs such as PACE and LearningRx stimulate this development with graduated exercises.
