developmental vision problems. His routine eye exam didn't catch it because that tests for acuity at 20 feet. The routine exam doesn't check to see if the eyes track smoothly from left to right or up and down for more than a couple of seconds. It didn't check if his *binocular* vision was good at reading distances. There are a whole slue of other vision problems that aren't covered in a normal exam.
Look for a developmental optometrist to do the exam and therapy. If the VT doesn't include cognitive therapy to train the brain, you may need to do that to train the brain to use the new info coming in from the eyes.
Now, this may not make your ds into an instant reader because good auditory skills are also needed to read. Also a good working memory is needed for comprehension. But if the eyes can't easily track across the paper, he won't be reading much.
