I posted a few months back @ my son who is 8. He is struggling to read. We use SWR for spelling and he knows almost all the phograms by memory. He can sound out a good deal of words. We drill the phonograms daily and I have made flash cards for each spelling word he does. When we drill the cards( for reading not spelling) he gets them just about all right.
As we do a SWR lesson I say the word and we sound it out to spell using magnetic letters. I have the regular letters and all the phonograms in magnetic tiles. He uses this to put the words together. He then writes them down in his spelling book.
We take 4 days to do 20 words and by Friday he can usually read the word as I hold us the flash card although he has to sound out each word letter by letter. Some he just knows, kwim?
Yet, put the same words in a sentence and he struggles with reaing it? Words he just read on the card is like he is seeing it for the first time.
He does 1-2 pages in ETC each day and we read 1-2 pages in his phonics reader every day.
I have tried teach Your Child to Read in 100 EZ Lessons, Phonics Pathways, ABCdarian ( I liked it, but it was too slow for him). I feel SWR is teaching him the best so far.
My insurance wont pay for an eval and private wanted $1500. I could do it through the public school and although he does get speech services at the public school now I wont enroll him here so I am not sure I want to go there
So, now what? I don't know what to DO with him? Not sure what road to take.
I'd appreciate any insight, recommendations or program suggestions.
