There ARE many children who are accelerated because they're early developers -- not because they're gifted. This could be especially true if the parents have been working with them at home. Every preschooler parent in the world is looking for "giftedness," and most are convinced their little Susie or Sammy has got it! Schools probably have to deal with these parents all the time. You're right -- other students will catch up to these earlybirds eventually.
I'm not talking here about certifiably high-IQ students -- just run-of-the-mill acceleration.
And yes, I agree that truly gifted students do need MORE in the sense of going deeper into the work.
What you are saying makes a tremendous amount of sense, and I appreciate your sharing your wisdom with us.
