My son the science/math geek loved these. We also primarily use textbooks for math and science once we get to the logic level.
Don't be afraid to buy the older, mid 1990s, editions. I only have one of the newer editions, but the main changes are flashier graphics. My son has already passed the CLEP Biology exam and when I asked him to check "Parade of Life" (c1993), Cells (c1993, 1994 & 1997), and Human Biology and Health (c1993, 1994 & 1997), I had to keep telling him to just skim and let me know if they're still valid. They are. Then he went back to read Parade of Life again because it's still interesting.
I can't help with Chemistry. Once my son got to "high school" level (middle school age) he did HS Biology, then college level Biology, then college level Anatomy & Physiology. He doing Chemistry right now.
I want to note that he only reads the texts until he gets to college level. He doesn't do any of the questions, tests, etc., because he sticks with the subject through college level. Once he's on the college level he does all of the quizzes and tests and some of the experiments, as well as watching all of the experiments performed on the corresponding Thinkwell video CDs.
