I wouldn't try to put things in context. I'm thinking context to a child of 3 is pretty limited. They are developing life experiance through watching MSB and reading science books. That in itself is the only context that matters at this point. If he asks for more info then he wants more info. That's how my son learns. He just absorbs things like a sponge. Then one day it clicks. When he watched MSB Makes a Rainbow he was around three. I didn't think he was grasping the concept. But six weeks later he saw a prism and went into great detail about how this is just like MSB with all the techy terms too.
