I bought a Magic School Bus video about space from a thrift store for $2 for my 3yo and he loves it. He can now recognize the planets etc. He liked it so much I got out this collection of magic school bus and other science-type books I had put away for when he is older, and he really loves them. I have been reading several to him every day. (If you haven't seen it, the Magic School Bus videos have a class and their teacher ride a school bus for example, into space, in a volcano, in the human body, in animal habitats, etc.)
I am very happy he is excited, but I am having a hard time figuring out how to conect these things with what he is familiar with. It just seems like he doesn't have the background to truly understand what a planet is, so it seems weird that he has already memorized all the planets in order and he can recognize them when he sees them. The same with topics like a volcano or the rainforest, he has never heard of a volcano before so how can he learn how they work?
I am wondering if I should really try to go into things that would help him understand about the planets and earth and everything, or if I should just let him learn these things and figure out how they connect to reality later.
Thanks for any ideas and experience with your own kids!
