the problem, or appearance of one, is with the rest of the world, tee hee. Where is it written that subjects must be covered in the pace designed by the curriculum manufacturers? In their piles and piles of research, perhaps -- research about "normal" students, in "normal" educational situations. Our students are neither normal nor are they in normal educational situations.
So we have to overcome our years (40+ in my case!) of the outside world influencing our perceptions about what is "normal" and what is "accelerated." Because our children don't move on at an "accelerated" pace, they move at a pace that is "normal" for them! Oh my goodness, when a child is shedding tears about wanting MORE LATIN, it's difficult for me to imagine a situation in which I would not provide MORE LATIN!
And don't forget that she may learn -differently- too, not just faster. Take those spelling tests: if your observations are telling you that retention is a problem, keep giving her daily tests, but frequently give her a test of your own design, made up of words she needs to practice. Or work through your entire resource and then start over again the following year. There are many ways to approach this, once Mom starts to feel more comfortable about being radical about her approach toward education.
Once you achieve rebel status, the rest is easy. --KPzz
