I think it's more common with children who have uneven development and it's part of the unevenness. For example my ds, has tests exceptionally high in certain areas, but has huge deficits in fine motor and so some test scores wouldn't be accurate in estimating his abilities because the test requires at least average motor skills to complete a task. When "professionals" (not just mom) work with him they note shocking abilities in some areas. However, social awareness has never been an area ds could figure out and so he is very definitely immature. I think this is more often a situation with boys, however I was very much like this. This is also a frequent occurence in twice exceptional children, who might have learning disabilities or other conditions such as asperger's, autism, sensory integration dysfunction, ect. in addition to giftedness.
My dd is also gifted, although she doesn't "peak" as high as ds in his strongest areas, but she is strong across the board. She is at least "above average" at any measure, if not gifted: academically gifted, good athlete, socially adept. Boy, I wish I went through life like that --she takes after dh.
