I think that as a parent I tend to expect much more from my gifted child than from children who I consider relatively average. This expectation can make any childish behavior seem "immature" when in reality it is par for the course for most children that age. True maturity comes with age and experience not just knowledge and ability.

Another consideration is the child's personality. Both quiet, reserved children and loud, say-the-first-thing-that-comes-to-your-mind children can seem socially immature to adults that tend to be their opposites.
