We had a less writing intensive day today. I figured we both needed a break. I wrote out the HTT notebook pages for him, using his answers to the review questions in the SOTW AG to prompt him in "dictating" summaries for me. Then he shocked me by voluntarily taking on another notebook page (a list of Greek gods and what they ruled) to do on his own.
I also let him do almost all of today's Rod & Staff grammar work orally. I mean, he was getting everything right, anyway. I decided that I don't really need him to copy that many sentences. I had him do 3 today. I would rather not use up all his tolerance for writing in any given day on copying grammar sentences.
Incidentally, part of the reason I decided to try the Hold That Thought notebook pages was to minimize the "blank page" problem. These pages have pictures, they pertain to specific topics, and a few of them (like the one he chose to do today) are charts to fill in. Sure, they do have blank lines that we need to write on, but I was hoping that the pictures and all would help.
I looked at the Writing Strands book last night after I posted, and I do think it will work out, but I am glad I am waiting a couple months to start it. I need to bring him around some, first. I also probably need to build his confidence. I think part of this may be because he is so used to being GOOD at things, and this just does not come naturally for him.
I also reread TWTM on this, and wonder if I am expecting too much of him. Yeah, he is accelerated in so many areas, but he is still only 8 going on 9.
Thank you, everyone!--Sydney
