I'd definitely NOT drop what he's good at...it's too easy for him to lose a lot of self esteem if the focus is on his weakness. Also, do get his eyes checked and other tests if necessary. Finally, IN ADDITION to this, I highly recommend "Smart Moves: Why Learning is not All in Your Head" by Carla Hannaford. All my children are either gifted or accellerated, but I also have two with totally different situations, and the one that does NOT have Asperger's by any stretch of the definition, needed what I learned in this book. He is very accellerated in certain categories, but it's going to take a lot of work to teach him to read. Thankfully, thanks to the WTM special needs board, which I recommend you also post on for this. Some of the mothers there know TONS of resources for this.
