The only thing that helped to get writing assignments done was to sit right next to him and walk him through every step. I asked leading questions, he would answer, I would write down his answer, he would copy.

Last year (6th grade) he finally began creating interesting spelling word sentences on his own. It used to be "Tim" did this or Tim did that. I would have to go over every sentence with him to improve their quality. Boy did I lay on the praise when he started doing them on his own.

This year he has a history report every Friday. The first Friday, I wrote the usual questions down handed him the paper and left the room. He only came to me once with a REALLY stupid question that he knew the answer to. I asked him why he would want to make the assignment harder than it was. He looked at me, didn't say anything, and went back to the table and finished it record time. I took a thankful breath, he's 12 yo and we are finally there!

By the way, this child suddenly has to go to the bathroom whenever any kind of work is mentioned.
:-)
