My son is about to turn 8, so he's a little younger than yours. We're doing grade 5 French (our main language), but grade 2 writing! ARGH! Our kids are twins, they behave exactly the same way...
My main advantage over you is that my son has always been homeschooled. Grade 1 was a disaster for writing. He was enrolled in a long distance program which required plenty of writing even for Grade 1. It required a full page of creative writing every 6 weeks. It was horrible.
Now two years later, I *am* seeing improvements in my son. Basically, the reaction you described is considered an improvement on previous reactions here :-)
But this improvement gives me hope for the future.
BTW, we started Writing Strands 2 last year, and my son loved it. He hated writing, but he loved playing with words, and thinking about writing.
This year, he's doing a typing program. Within a year or two, I'm moving all his work to the computer.
