it is my understanding that there are some locations that are just for the younger kids. Did the TIP people just tell you to register for the SAT? Sometimes magnet middle schools are testing centers.
My ds hasn't taken the SAT yet (not old enough), but the other qualifying tests he took for CTY were through a diagnostic center JHU sent us to. There were several kids on the day we were assigned, some taking the SAT, some taking the other tests. Forgive me for not remembering the names of the tests my ds has taken, I'm tired. I just know the results he got qualified him for CTY programs and daycamps. He did the math program. Daycamp was too far and too expensive to consider. Even though I am a math person and could have supervised ds's math, I was glad to have one less subject. I also think the CTY stamp is helpful for credibility--but not totally necesary.
