Dd definitely reached a ceiling with Saxon by 7th grade--repetition was not producing understanding or problem solving ability if the problem didn't look exactly like what was presented in Saxon. We did ALEKS for one year, but I felt the explanations were inadequate and i was again explaining and translating the text to her.
Life of Fred has been a revelation to us both. Made me finally understand Algebra. As I just posted on the high school board, I've completed college calculus, but LOF made stuff make sense.
I'm not a math expert, but I have compared it with Jacobs, and as far as I can tell, it covers everything Jacobs covers, and then some. IMHO, going with what the kid likes and will use is more important than seeking the ultimate best. They'll retain more from what they enthusiastically use.
BTW, dd recently had to take the EXPLORE for high school placement (even tho she already did it back in 6th) and was pretty sure she got all the math right. We'll see. In any event, she was very confident on the math, more than ever before.
