He was rather intuitive about math but we slowed him down and through practice helped him to "see" the steps even if he wasn't going to "use" the steps in his own problem solving. He did very well and still doesn't show all the steps but can explain them when asked. He was a rather mature 10yo.
I used Saxon Algebra with him but also did a day once a week of Gelfand ALgebra which he really liked.
If he were mine, I would go for it and see how he does. Does it really matter if he can show the steps if he knows how to do a problem correctly. I would think that ability would help him greatly on things like SAT or in college. The problem would come if he doesn't get them correct and you can't figure out where the error is but I think with practice doing some your way and some his, he could probably learn the steps.
