First off, I'm not working with kids who are as advanced as your son is, so my experience may not be the same as yours. DS is in the middle of MUS pre-algebra and is 11. I suppose he could be moving more quickly, but we have not been pushing him and he is neverr in a hurry to do more schoolwork. DD, 3 years older, started algebra at about 11 1/2.

It took DD a year and a half to finish algebra I--it was a big leap. I want DS to be 12 before we start--and I'm hoping that that extra maturity makes it a little less of a big hurdle.

I think you could go ahead and start algebra, but be ready to take it slowly and move to other diversions if it seems like too much. I think he'll probably do ok in the early parts of algebra, but when the problems get complicated enough that they are hard to hold in one's head, he may have problems.
