My son, 10yo, has finished pre-algebra in about 2-3 months. We did MUS, including the honours program which he's doing now.
He inhaled the math concepts, and is on a major math trip. In other words, his eyes are shining.
BUT...
he can't write down his steps. His answers are all correct, and he can explain orally what he's doing. I know he gets it. But I can never get him to write coherently the steps needed to solve a problem. I think his mind is all a blur (it shows in other areas too). He's completely intuitive when it comes to math, and if I hadn't held him back he'd be done with algebra by now. (he did enjoy the program I used to hold him back, because it's a very imaginative program that handles all aspects of math. One of his last problems was how to get a 20$ from under a bottle without touching the bottle. It's a program that made him think!)
What's my next step? Can he safely move on to algebra, and I pray his mind gets more orderly with maturity? Or should I hold him back some more? Right now, he no longer wants to work with that other program. He wants algebra big time!
