Hi,
I would do the placement test, get the books it recommends, then jump in, skipping or skimming any parts that are redundant/easy. With PM, it is better to start at an appropriate place, even if the number is lower than it was in the other program, than to start too high and not get the foundation. Here is the diff. between the 3 different editions. 3rd edition is the original. US ed is identical to the 3rd ed except that it has an extra section on English units in addition to the one on metric, and it puts back in a section on dividing fractions that got taken out of the 3rd edition. Standards ed is fairly new - it was done to comply with CA standards. It is also identical to the US edition, only rearranged somewhat to more closely match the typical sequence of topics in CA (?). I recommend the US edition. None of these editions have been "dumbed down" AT ALL. You'll be getting the "good stuff" no matter which edition you go with. As far as testing goes, I've heard mostly good things about how kids come out in testing. Anyway, hth. Good luck choosing. I love PM and have used it with 3 kids over a period of 9 years or so. I think it's great!
