K is 5, and we did Galloping the Globe this fall and plan to start SOTW next week. We've been doing a WTM-ish animal study since the fall also, and will continue that until the summer because there are plenty of animals to fill up the extra months. Even if it takes us a full year to do "first grade" she'll still be far younger than outschool kids completing that level. I'm getting really frustrated with the grade-level labels for everything, because she's at such different levels in each subject, as I'm guessing most kids are.
We're using Miquon for math, with some extra stuff when I find it. She has decided she wants to learn cursive, so we're doing that for handwriting and I plan to move to copywork when she's mastered the alphabet.
I definitely find that her writing skills slow her down. Plenty of times she'll rebel against work she's perfectly capable of, because it's too much writing. I do some things orally, or let her do a partial assignment.
