The truth is that often times book smart kids don't make it because they're not people smart. You mention that he adds scripture references after the men are done teaching. This is just an off the wall guess, so please don't be offended, but if the men perceive that in a threatening way -- this boy, who should be learning from us, is trying to teach us -- and Nathan is not picking that up from their subtle cues -- that could explain part of your husband's worry. My partner thinks its awesome that our gifted kid knows more than us, but he still experiences annoyance when the 7yo shows him up with a prideful smirk.

I don't think you should pigeonhole as a failure a kid who has a great deal of intellectual power, though. And I can understand how it's particularly upsetting to experience your husband condemning your son. Good Friends Are Hard to Find by Fred Frankel helped me to figure out when to intervene with my kids in social situations, and when to let them be.
