My 4 year old is doing 1st and 2nd grade work in most areas and I praise her and tell her how smart she is daily. However I have taught her that everyone is gifted and smart in their own way. I say "Who is smarter Daddy or Mommy?" Then she usually looks confused or sometime says one of us is smarter than the other. Then I start pointing out our strenght and asking if I am as good at wood working as Daddy, can I fix the car, etc. Then I say is Daddy a good nurse? Can Daddy fix sick people? Can Daddy remeber all the things Mommy remembers? She then agrees that he is better in some area and I am better in others. Then I tell her that everyone is smart in different ways. My grandmother had her masters in education, but my grandfather never made in though elemenentary school. He was just as brillant as she was, but for him it was wood working, wiring, home building, etc. He worked for Nasa wiring space craft for a while. We need lots of people with lots of talents to make the world balance and work. Different is good;)
