Get ahold of the Leapfrog videos, if you can. They are very entertaining, and the children retain the information.

Magnet letters or alphabet flash cards (not to use as drill, but more to let them create words).

My youngest son (just now 4), has known the letters/sounds for 2+ years. We started this year with a K5 Abeka program, and after a week on blending, he is now able to easilly read short one-vowel words. Unlike my oldest boy, this one is very easy to motivate (for reading, anyhow).

Once they understand blending on their own, and can sound out short words -- mine have seemed to be ready to start a more formal program -- and it has gone much more smoothly.
