I know there are plenty of tricks that can be recommended - using different curriculum, etc. - but I use it as a character-building opportunity. I, having grown up as a doted-on perfectionist oldest child and seeing the hideous fruit of that as an adult, am glad for any moment where someone is better than one of my dc, especially my oldest! Things come easily to my dc, like they did to me, and I want them to understand that they won't always be the very best at everything, and that that is OKAY.
