Bringing over my query from the K8 board

Well, we're four weeks into the current academic year, so what's next? Right! I'm starting to think about next year.

We'll be cycling back around to the ancients next year, and I'm trying to build a nice, big list of possible books for my son to read. I'm notoriously cheap, so my practice is to keep lists in my purse of all the titles and subjects I'm considering for at least a couple of years out so that I can pick things up when I see them on sale or used. But I'm finding my list for next year pretty sparse.

My son will be 10, but he's an excellent and fast reader. (In addition to his assigned reading last year, he read about 50 full-length novels for fun.) He goes through typical "intermediate" level novels (the ones that say they are for ages 9-12) in no more than a couple of days when he really likes them.

So far, this is what I have on my possibles list:

Aesop's Fables
Archimedes and the Door of Science, Bendick
Boy of the Painted Cave, Denzel (Prehistory)
Boys' and Girls' Herodotus
Cat of Bubastes, Henty (Egypt)
Children's Homer, Colum
Ch'I-Lin Purse: A Collection of Ancient Chinese Stories, Fang
D Aulaire's Greek Myths
Dar and the Spear Thrower, Cowley (Prehistory)
Detectives in Togas, Winterfield
Eagle of the Ninth, Sutcliffe (Roman Empire)
Famous Men of Greece, Haaren
Famous Men of Rome, Haaren
For Freedom and For Gaul, Paul L. Anderson
Gilgamesh the Hero, McCaughrean
Mystery of the Roman Ransom, Winterfield
Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt, Payne (Egypt)
Pugnax, the Gladiator, Paul L. Anderson
Science in Ancient Egypt, Woods (Egypt)
Slave of Catiline, Paul L. Anderson
Story of Science: Aristotle Leads the Way, Hakim
Swords in the North, Paul L. Anderson
The Golden Goblet, McGraw (Egypt)
Theras and His Town, Snedeker (Greece / Sparta)
Trouble at Timpetill, Winterfield
Twenty Jataka Tales, Khan (Buddhist)
Well of Sacrifice, Eboch (Maya)
With the Eagles, Paul L. Anderson

That's not going to be enough to get him through a full academic year, though, even assuming I could luck into finding all of those on my usual budget.

So, I'd love to hear suggestions for other things to add to my list. I'd also especially love ideas for filling in the glaring holes in terms of geography/cultures, specifically China and the middle east.

Thanks a bunch in advance! I can't wait to see what you all come up with.
