I love the PM series and it is our primary series but I also start out with Miquon in the early years. It is well done and complements PM IMHO. Can be done very loosey-goosey which is one of the things I love about it with the tiny tots. . . If I were you, I'd get Miquon and use that primarily indefinitely and pull PM back out in addition when my dc was ready. That way, that math brain will keep exploring and growing while he is developing the patience needed for the structure of PM.
