One day on the way to the store my ds looked at the bottles I was returning and said, Oh mom you're going to get $12 back because you've got 4 bottles (they are $3/bottle). He also played "gas station" and started calling out that it was $100 for 10 gallons of gas, then he confided in me that that was $10 for each gallon.
So this fall I looked at the books and decided to skip EB 2B, and go straight to PM 1A. He's finding it a little dull. I can barely get him to do 1 exercise each day.....BUT I have a pollywog sheet that he sat and worked out double digit addition problems with. He saw it (older dd's math) and wanted to try it, so I gave him some rods, explained that each rod had a different length/number value (we hadn't used them before), and he got busy. After he got the first few right, I wanted to see what he was doing.
For 26 + 26, he worked it out this way:
10, 10, 6 changed to 8, 8, 4, 6
Took another 8, 8, 4, 6
Look for a few seconds, and said "52"
On another problem he took out eight 9's and one 8 and asked, "Is this 80?"
For his painting time he's painted the 100's chart twice now. Now, he writes some of his numbers backwards (2, 5, 6).
He scored 62 on the placement test for PM 1B, partly because he's never done written multiplication and didn't know what the "x" meant! So I thought maybe I'd move him to that, but first I wanted to be sure he has his math facts to 20, since that is in 1A. He already has up to 10 down cold.
Yesterday I worked with him on "making tens". 8 + 5 = (8 + 2) +3 = 13. He wasn't interested in learning the method. He doesn't really like being told how to do something, he likes to do it all himself. So do I:
a) Wait for 1B, and teach concepts like making ten through games instead of workbooks - and maybe just do math games most of his kindergarten year
b) Work on teaching him the methods shown, and learning to sit and learn from someone else (which he'll have to know how to do someday)
c) Move forward to 1B and add Intensive Practice 1B.
d) Get Intensive Practice 1A and wait for 1B
