Well, I wouldn't wait until ds is 8. As I recall, you can do WS as soon as a child is done WS OR when 8 if they haven't done previous WS. We didn't do WS 1 or 2, but my eldest did WS 3 & part of 4. What 3 does is start to get into longer writings than just sentences, but breaks the writing process up into steps. Your ds may want to do the entire lesson in one day, which is fine. My dd HATED any assigned writing, also had excellent mechanics, so we broke it up, and I think that's the point of it.

I wouldn't call it a serious writing program, and haven't done it with my second dd because she's doing her writing with R&S English 5. She's great at content, etc, and does lots of writing on her own, but has trouble remembering to capitalize and spell correctly (spelling is her weak point, but that's because she's very much a vs learner.)
