In Reply to: Acceleration and gifted kids... do they really "forget" the basics, (continued from thread below) posted by Kay in Cal
My dss aren't (as far as I know) PG but are accelerated in all areas (except physically). And like your ds they remember everylovin' thing that comes out of anyones mouth... weather I want them to or not. Also they remember ever thing they see and read. But we do a quick refresher every 6 mo. or so with all the basics.
I see it like riding a bike. I haven't ridden one in years and if I got on one tonight I might; fall off once or twice, be a little wobbly or forget to brake and run into a tree. But give me an hour and I'll be zooming along like an old pro. Why? Because once upon a time I learned to ride a bike correctly and my brain will get back that info. after a short while.
I think this is the same with math skills. If the child learned them (even memorized them) they will come back with a little practice. My kids don't need much practice to recall things. Weather this is normal for most gifted kids I don't know. But I know it's normal for my kids. (Provided that they understand the concept.) So we forge ahead in whatever... periodically reviewing an old topic.
