BUT, they gave us a breather of a few weeks so we weren't having to cough up the dough before we even got paid.

I'd say dress the way the other sales staff dresses, and be sure to ask when he gets there. A quick, "Hey, I didn't see anything about a dress code or uniform. Is this okay?" goes a long way. :-)
