Mackinaw City is nice but you might want to consider staying 1 night in Mackinaw City and one in Traverse City.
It is just over an hour from the Soo to Mackinaw City (if I remember right) and then about 2 1/2 hours to Traverse City (no major expressway---just 2 lane highway).
If you can swing it, we LOVE the Cherry Hut in Benzonia/Beulah area. It is right on US 31 and has wonderful cherry burgers and cherry aid--oh, and a WONDERFUL hot fudge cherry brownie sundae.
