What would you want to come away with?
Here's the thing. My dh and I have been asked if we would allow our garden to be featured on a tour next September. We're to be the "low tech solutions" folks. (The other home on the tour has solar panels.) Now our job is to figure out how we want to "package" our "message". The tour is being sponsored by a small university that recently received a large grant to work with the community on "waste reduction" projects.
I'm having a little crisis of confidence, I think. I just keep looking at my little garden and thinking, any idiot could do this. But I guess that might have been the point of asking us(!).
We live in the city and have a standard city lot; I think it's 50' x 125', but not positive. Our front is a mostly-edible landscape: 2 apples, a plum and a cherry tree along the edges of the lot, a grape arbor (made from recycled timbers) at the front of the walkway, blubes, strawberries, herbs and veggies in and around the bigger stuff. In the back, we have a home-made rainbarrel, two ducks, and a compost area that we don't turn or tend in the way that books describe that we're supposed to. We just toss stuff out there and then thow it in the beds when it's broken down. We have raspberries along the back alley, and elderberries under some native trees / plantings.
Do you think people on this tour will just want to see what this all looks like? Will they want me to talk about what books have influenced our design? Will they want to see a list? I'll have 30 minutes with about 30 people and I think I'm expected to talk a little and answer questions. I would love to hear your thoughts on this, since I don't really know what the most interesting or useful bit of what we do would be....
