- I'm not a dog trainer, but this has worked really well for us, over the years. Both dogs are on leashes, and both owners allow them to bark their heads off at each other, from a close, but safe distance. Soon, tails begin to wag, then the play bow, then first one dog (the smaller) then the other are let off of their leashes to play. If they don't both play bow, then they both have to stay on their leashes. That initial bark-fest seems really important to dogs.
