We have a deaf Boston Terrier. He was born deaf. We've had him since he was 6 mos. old. His siblings were quite expensive but since he was deaf, we were able to get a purebred. :-)

I honestly don't see much difference between our dog and other dogs. Our dog is vivacious, interactive and loves life as much as any other dog I see. There are even some advantages. He isn't afraid of storms or fireworks and when he sleeps, we never have to worry about waking him up. :-)

We do have a buzz (not shock) collar for him that we use to get his attention when we need to. He doesn't always wear it, but it's useful to have when we need him to wear it. Of course we can't call him from across a yard when his back is turned, but he does come when the he feels a pulse from his collar. He know he gets a treat when he comes. :-)

FWIW, our dog has gone through Petsmart's dog obedience class and done extremely well. He also participated with my dd in an obedience and agility class this summer. He did very well with that too.

HTH! I think you'll enjoy a deaf dog. It's like anything like that - the deafness becomes less and less of an issue the more you get to know him/her.

I think there's a website that you can learn more about deaf dogs. I'll try to link it:
