But the first two aren't all that brilliant, really. What I love about the whole thing is that they mark certain "chapters" in my boys' lives. The books have become a part of their childhood, over these last 11 years. (But then, so have many, many other books!)
I think, personally, that JK's gift is that she's able to create a great community of lovable characters.
My favorite, btw, is still book 3.
