You see, the end of July marks the half way point in the market season for me. It's hot as stink. There are weeds the size of my bathroom growing everywhere. Various plants have hideous diseases, and the insect population looks like a city street in Tokyo. But, I'm only half way.
I always wonder if I'll make it before they have to commit me. Or if, perhaps, I'll just go and stand in a single spot long enough for the weeds to take over my body and infiltrate my brain. Now is the time when I get to try, somehow, to coax fall crops from overheated soil, to keep the rabbits, deer, and Japanese beetles from eating everything in sight, to make the chickens believe they are not as hot as the dumplings they may one day swim with so that they continue to lay eggs, and to keep my children from poking each other and my last nerve that one last time just out of spite. Suffice it to say, this is true grit.
The upside? The tomatoes are ripe, colorful, and lush. We've just enjoyed the biggest "breba crop" of figs I've ever seen, and the main crop is yet to come. We are seeing record numbers of customers at the farmers' market, and every week, my stand is next to the French baker who isn't nearly as cute as his pastries and his accent, but hey, you can't have everything!
How goes things with you?
