Interestingly enough, although DD attended public school until this winter, every place we've been her closest friends ended up being kids who she had no contact with at school. She's always found friends to connect with, almost *despite* public school. She did enjoy socializing with kids in school, but they were playground friends that didn't extend into her world outside of school.
As far as close friendships go... In TX, it was a neighbor girl who attended a different school, in another town it was a friend from church... again, different school. Here, it is neighbor girls who attend PS but DD doesn't. Her very best friends, of course, are her siblings. They are younger than she is, and other than the baby they're boys, so she appreciated that outside friendship... something that was her own.
Sending her to school will not guarantee "a buddy." More likely, she will end up with even more acquaintances.
