I have two kids, and they generally have three pairs of shoes each. Our entryway is tile; I really like to corral the kids' shoes there along that out of the way wall. My original plan was one dishpan per kid on the coat closet floor, but this developed and it works.
My husband takes his shoes off at his chair, and there they live. I guess he must swap them out occasionally with the ones that live under his side of our bed.
I slip off my shoes at the entry table, or at the foot of the stairs (around the corner). All but my shoes-for-the-day and my gardening flipflops live in my closet.
Out of season shoes and hiking boots live in the bottom of the coat closet until I realize that season is long gone and those kids' shoes are too small now. Heh.
