they're making signs to "talk" to their friend across the street. They're using duct tape to make letters on 8 1/2 x 11 sheets of paper, and using dh's binoculars to read her messages back.
Man, I wish I could have done that when I was a kid! (Rural, no neighbors.) It's almost as great as cans on a string.
I barely managed to put on my stern face to tell them to make the next message "good night."
