Maybe I've just gotten used to them, but ours don't really smell....

We have 4 now, in 2 separate cages. I'd say that we change the bedding about every 2 weeks. We've been using wood pellets (I used to get the kind you use in woodstoves, then in FL I started buying the kind for horse stalls), and they are cheap and definitely less messy than the shavings. They do enjoy being held, and it's fun to feed them romaine lettuce and carrots for treats. We've had them about 4 years, and I'd say that other than a few reminders, the kids have taken care of them by themselves. (And, our oldest was 9 when we got them).
HTH! Our piggies have been great pets for our family.
