We dropped him off today for his third summer's one week at church camp. In early June he had his first ever week at Boy Scout camp. Follow the packing list! Then, we add the cards and a book of choice.
This was the first year he chose a couple of other things to bring: Silly Putty and a glitter wand -- don't know why! -- and he asked for a single-use camera, too, so we picked one up.
Last year at church camp pickup I heard several parents, in addition to me, saying in bemused disbelief, "You learned to play poker at church camp?!?" We're Episcopalian, so cards aren't verboten, but it was still pretty funny. Apparently some kids had brought cards and poker chips, and there was some Texas Hold 'Em poker playing by those 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders during afternoon quiet time. Too funny.
And I sent last year's untouched packet of pre-addressed and stamped postcards with him again this year. Maybe this year he'll scrawl a note on a card or two and drop them in the mail...
blessings,
