Guinea Pigs - how do they make for pets? :-P (m)

10yo and I are researching other small pets options for her after having ruled out the hamster. We'd like something that will be more sociable and enjoy being cuddled. Might a guinea pig fit this bill? If so, how hard is it to maintain them as a pet - cleaning up after, feeding, etc. Any insight you can give us on guinea pigs as a pet would be greatly appreciated.
