I'm definitely not sending my kids blindly to someone's house to play video games. But, no one has ever minded when I stop (or call) and ask what games they have in their house. No one has ever balked when I said my kids were not allowed to play "x" games.
I don't know your son's age, but, trust me, I'm a wimp. The first few times, it was really hard for me to ask those questions (along with "Ummmm do you keep guns in your house) ... but people are really nice and happy to answer questions (I know I am when (very few) people ask me).
Not criticizing you, just letting you know that it is an option. AND, I encourage the kids to do almost anything other than play video games. That's pretty much a last resort around here.
