It may not be quite as nice as Encyclopedia Britannica, but it will certainly help your dc learn to use an encyclopedia. If another one comes along later that you like better, buy it and sell this one on Craigslist.
Have you looked at library sales? I purchased a 15yo set of Children's Britannica for $3 at a library sale, where someone donated it so the Friends of the Library could sell it to raise money for educational programming. I have another set of adult encyclopedias from the same era that I bought at a garage sale for $1. So far, these two sets have been more than enough for us to use as references.
