Has ds been assigned a roomated yet? Have they talked about who has what yet? That helps eliminate duplication.
Things I thought my mom was weird for insisting, but appreciated once on my own: two sets of sheets, two sets of towels, a decent reading light for near my bed, several containers of laundry detergent and several rolls of quarters, she had me pack up my MOST favorite books (I call them my comfort books - some silly choices on my part, but it was nice to have them when I was feeling lonely), also, she had collected a GREAT assortment of school/office supplies (wise woman, they're expensive on campus and I didn't have a car, plus she included crazy stuff that I never would have thought of shopping on my own - envelopes, white out, an assortment of blank cards, glue, a little box of weird artsy/crafty stuff (glitter/buttons/ribbon/nature stuff), she also gave me, when they dumped me off, several framed photos of our family and my friends (very nice to have).
I'm old, we couldn't have microwaves in our room, but my trusty hotpot was great for tea or instant soup. One thing I remember that we could have used (the school I went to had suites, so four of us shared a bathroom) was a bathroom rug or 2.
