Boys do not hear as well as girls. They cannot hear as soft of sounds as girls do so being louder is simply normal to them where it may make a mother nuts. Most doctors don't even take this into consideration but it's a physiological truth.
The book "Why Gender Matters" gives a lot of details into boy/girl differences with a great deal of references to specific studies and how it may apply to real life. It's a very interesting read.
