Over half of my dd6's birthday party invitees were adults - but she proudly counts them her friends and they count her as their friend too - not in a patronizing way either.
Another thing, awhile ago I "polled" my neighbors (who all have kids in the public schools) - for all the "socialization" talk - none of these kids had "special friends" from school - they had a lot of acquaintances and "got along" - but no best friends. I think sometimes that comes later - once you get more settled in your personality and interests.
